We apply topical numbing 30 minutes before your session. Most patients describe the sensation as warmth or a quick stinging — closer to a rubber band snap than sharp pain. IPL is the most comfortable; Fractional CO₂ is the most intense but manageable with numbing and cooled airflow during treatment.
Day-by-day expectation: Fractional CO₂: day 1–2 red and slightly swollen, day 3–5 peeling like a strong sunburn, day 6–7 pink and coverable with mineral makeup. Erbium YAG: day 1–2 red, day 3–5 light flaking, recovered by day 5–6. IPL: 1–3 hours of warmth, possible pinpoint darker spots that flake off in 5–7 days (the sun damage leaving your skin). Your consultation gives you the exact downtime for your specific protocol, in writing.
The honest answer: laser behavior varies significantly across Fitzpatrick types I–VI. Some clinics default to settings optimized for lighter skin, which is why medium, olive, and darker tones sometimes end up with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation elsewhere. Our process: Fitzpatrick typing first, then laser selection and energy calibration that's appropriate for your specific skin. If we don't believe a technology is the right fit for your skin type, we'll tell you — and recommend a safer alternative (or none, if nothing fits).
Collagen rebuild is biological — it happens over 2–6 weeks minimum, regardless of technology. The protocol is designed as a series, not a single shot. The role of the consultation is to project realistically what laser can and cannot do for your specific skin before you pay for treatment. If we can't project the results you're hoping for, we tell you in the consultation — and you keep the written protocol either way.
Timing matters. October through March is the ideal window in South Florida — less UV, easier SPF compliance. It's doable year-round with strict precautions (SPF 50+ reapplied every 2 hours, wide-brim hat, no direct sun for the first 4–6 weeks post-treatment, no chlorinated pools for 10 days). If you're planning a beach vacation, schedule the laser at least 6–8 weeks before or after.
